Reducing your pain, improving your mobility
Your hip joint is a ball and socket joint. It connects your thigh bone (femur) to your pelvis and allows you to stand and move your legs.
Like other parts of your body, your hip can become damaged. Ongoing wear and tear, injury, arthritis and other conditions can cause pain and mobility issues that interfere with everyday life. While less invasive treatments for hip joint repair, including joint preservation may provide relief in many cases, joint replacement (hip arthroplasty) may be the best option for you.
At New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) we provide you with the most advanced, personalized care for hip replacement. It’s focused on you and built around your specific needs. You have access to highly skilled and experienced orthopedic surgeons. They’re joined by award-winning nurses, expert physical and occupational therapists and dedicated discharge planners. These caring professionals provide you with the comprehensive education and support you need to get back to daily living safely and comfortably.
All of this has helped us earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for advanced certification for total hip replacement. We’ve also been awarded the top rating of “High Performing” from U.S. News and World Report for hip replacement. These awards recognize our efforts to provide the highest quality care and to offer you the best possible patient experience.
You receive exceptional care for hip replacement in Boston from the hip experts at New England Baptist Hospital. And through our New England Baptist Orthopedic (NEBO) Program we bring our specialized services to communities throughout the region, so you can access them close to your home.
Hip replacement involves removing damaged portions of your hip joint. Surgeons then insert artificial components or a new joint, also known as a hip prosthesis or hip implant.
There are several types of hip surgeries. Your doctor will work with you to determine which type is right for you.
During traditional, open surgery, doctors make an incision that allows them to access your hip. Often this is done on the side of your hip (lateral) or from the back (posterior). Anterior hip replacement performed at New England Baptist Hospital involves approaching your hip from the front. An anterior approach may limit the need to cut through muscle.
Minimally invasive procedures use smaller incisions and special techniques. Although these procedures may not be right for you, they often result in less pain, shorter hospital stays and fewer complications than open surgery.
At New England Baptist Hospital we use the most cutting-edge technologies to help you achieve the best results. For instance, intraoperative software helps surgeons accurately place the components of your new hip during surgery. This precision makes it possible for you to get the best alignment.
New England Baptist Hospital also pioneered total hip replacement guided by augmented reality (AR). This innovative technology displays 3D models of your anatomy, implants and surgical instruments inside your body, giving surgeons a better view during your operation. It’s a good example of our commitment to advancing joint replacement care and helping your operation go smoothly.
You will leave the hospital and go home once you've met your goals. Patients often achieve their goals and go home on the day of surgery. If you do stay overnight, your ride should arrive early the next morning in order to participate in your preparation to leave the hospital. We strive to help you achieve your recovery goals as quickly and safely as possible.
Successful hip surgery requires good preparation. If you and your doctor decide hip replacement is right for you, we give you the tools you need to prepare.
We teach you what to expect before surgery and how to plan your care, whether you'll be leaving the hospital day of surgery or spending a night in the hospital. You also can join our free hip replacement pre-operative virtual class. The class is designed for you and those caring for you at home. You’ll learn what to expect from your operation and recovery. The class also offers details about steps you can take to help your surgery go well and how to prepare your home for your return.
Additional pre-surgical education may help answer other questions you have. This information is available in English and Spanish. We provide details on pre-surgery exercises to help your recovery go smoothly, as well.
Just as we prepare you before surgery, we help you learn what to expect after surgery. Everyone’s situation is different. Talk with your surgeon to learn what you should expect as you heal. Your health care team will develop a personalized recovery plan that’s focused on helping you regain your strength and mobility. The team provides tools and guidance to help you achieve your goals.
We also offer rehabilitation services and specific exercises to help rebuild your strength and endurance. Our goal is to get you back to the activities that matter most to you.
Your team at New England Baptist Hospital is ready to guide you through the treatment and recovery process. You are the center of that team. By taking an active role in your care, you can have a more satisfying experience and achieve better results.
