Diagnosis of Orthopedic Conditions

Your orthopedist will begin by completing a physical exam, including asking you questions about your symptoms and health history. Depending on your symptoms, we also may order imaging tests, such as MRI or X-ray. Your specialist uses the results of these tests to diagnose your condition and create your treatment plan.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Orthopedic Conditions

The treatment your specialist will recommend depends on your diagnosis, your overall health and other factors. In most cases, your specialist will start with more conservative treatment options.

Your specialist may try one or a combination of these treatments:

  • Ice. Your doctor may recommend that you try applying ice to the affected area at home.
  • Injections. Your specialist may recommend targeted image-guided cortisone injections to help you find relief.
  • Medications. Your doctor may recommend over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medications to help reduce your pain and stiffness.
  • Physical Therapy. Working with a physical therapist can help you build strength and improve range of motion.
  • Rest. You may need to rest to avoid worsening your condition. If you have an injury, rest can allow it to heal.
Surgical Treatments for Orthopedic Conditions

If conservative treatments are not enough to manage your orthopedic condition, your orthopedist may recommend surgery, [Link to Services > Surgery] such as joint replacement. Your orthopedic doctor will explain which surgical procedure may be best for your situation.

You likely will need physical therapy after your surgery. During these sessions, you focus on regaining your function and range of motion, as well as strengthening your muscles.
