Joint Preservation & Restoration

Treating damaged joints without the need for surgery

Reverse or Slow Down Joint Degeneration

When your hip or knee joint begins to wear away, you have treatment options. Joint preservation is one option worth considering. It may slow or reverse joint degeneration and delay the need for joint replacement.

At New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) we offer a unique, individualized approach to joint preservation. Whether you have chronic degenerative joint changes caused by arthritis or a sudden traumatic injury, our team of experts is here for you.

What is Joint Preservation?

Joint pain and degeneration can be related to injuries to cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Damage to the labrum in your hip or the meniscus in your knee may cause discomfort, as well as problems with joint alignment.

Joint preservation uses a variety of advanced orthopedic treatments. They may or may not include surgery. Our focus is on addressing all factors that contribute to your specific joint injury or discomfort. We work to lessen your pain, improve your joint function and help you have a better quality of life.

Am I a Good Candidate for Joint Preservation?

Joint preservation may be right for you if you’re 15 to 60 years old and have joint pain but don’t have moderate to severe arthritis.

When you’re dealing with significant discomfort, we may consider joint replacement surgery. In some cases, even if you undergo joint preservation at first, joint replacement may eventually become necessary.

What Should I Expect?

Care will be personalized based on your unique needs. We evaluate your condition and determine which treatments are best for you. Depending on your individualized care plan, we may involve these or other specialists in your care:

  • Occupational medicine specialists
  • Orthopedic surgeons
  • Pain management specialists
  • Physiatrists
  • Physical therapists
  • Radiologists
  • Sports medicine specialists

We may recommend image-guided interventional treatments. Surgery might be another option. Your care plan could include minimally invasive procedures that use small cuts and allow for quicker healing than traditional, open surgeries.

Rehabilitation is part of most treatment plans as well. We choose the therapies that are likely to offer you the greatest benefit.

    Hip Preservation

Common hip conditions treated by our hip preservation specialists include these and other issues:

    • Athletic soft-tissue injuries, such as sports hernia
    • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
    • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
    • Hamstring tendon rupture
    • Hip dysplasia
    • Hip flexor tendonitis
    • Ischiofemoral impingement
    • Labral tears and chondral lesions in the hip

Many times, we use hip arthroscopy to provide hip care. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure. Surgeons make tiny cuts near your hip and insert a special camera that allows them to see inside your joint. The surgeon performs treatment by passing instruments through other tiny cuts in your skin.

If you need it, we offer nationally recognized hip replacement surgery.
