Musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging fellowship in Boston
The New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship for Diagnostic Radiologists was founded in 1997 by Arthur Newberg, MD. Working alongside our expert radiologists and orthopedists, you gain a wealth of experience and specialized knowledge in orthopedic imaging.
We offer one position annually. Each fellowship term lasts one year.
Salary is comparable to other Boston programs. Four weeks of vacation are scheduled as needed. Health insurance, malpractice coverage and parking are provided.
New England Baptist Hospital is an orthopedic specialty hospital. We have 16 operating rooms for our 118-bed hospital. We also staff an ambulatory surgery center in Dedham, MA.
We have three primary areas of focus:
Our radiology department images and treats a full range of sports injuries in both professional and amateur athletes. We participate in the care of the Celtics NBA Basketball team, as well as a variety of collegiate and high school athletes. Our teams perform diagnostic and therapeutic arthrograms daily.
Expert joint replacement surgeons perform more joint replacements at New England Baptist Hospital than at any other hospital in New England. Our radiology department images the spectrum of primary and revision arthroplasties, along with their accompanying complications. The majority of these are hip, knee and shoulder implants.
Teams also perform joint aspirations and therapeutic procedures daily. We routinely image pathology around joint replacements. We follow carefully developed imaging protocols to minimize hardware-associated artifacts that interfere with imaging results.
Orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists and neurologists provide comprehensive spine care at New England Baptist Hospital. Radiologists image a broad range of spine conditions including these and others:
The department’s neuroradiologists perform a large volume of pain management and diagnostic procedures.
A typical work week involves four days on the musculoskeletal service and one day in neuroradiology. Your time will be divided between MRI and CT imaging interpretation and procedures.
During the fellowship, you’ll gain experience in a variety of imaging-related skills:
Over the course of a year, you’ll gain experience with arthrograms of these and other body parts:
You’ll also have protected time scheduled for diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures. We have considerable flexibility and adapt the schedule to encourage the special interest(s) of each fellow.
The neuroradiology experience focuses on spine imaging and intervention. MRI and CT of preoperative and postoperative conditions are plentiful. Fellows gain knowledge in a range of areas:
All procedures are performed in the radiology department by radiologists.
An important aspect of the fellowship is consultation with physician colleagues. New England Baptist Hospital is a relatively small hospital, and the operating rooms are close to the radiology department. Frequent visits by our orthopedic colleagues are the norm. You are included in case discussions and become versed in surgical vernacular and clinical decision-making. You’ll also learn to appreciate the nuances of imaging findings and how they impact patients.
Radiologist coverage on evenings and weekends is accomplished via pager call with a remote physical access control system (PACS). Fellow call responsibilities match that of staff. Four call weekends and one holiday call are required during the fellowship year. Weekend moonlighting opportunities are available and encouraged.
As a fellow, you’re encouraged to participate in research. On average, you will be allocated one day every other week for academic and research time.
Staff may be engaged in several projects at any given time. We support you in presenting their research at national meetings, including those held by the Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR).
For the Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship, we do not participate in the SSR Match; however, we abide by the same timeline. We begin accepting applications on October 1 of each year. We begin interviewing December 1. We will extend an offer for our single position typically before mid-April — well before the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Rank Order List Certification Deadline in May.
We run a transparent interview process. We complete all interviews before we extend an offer. We schedule interviews for either morning or afternoon. During your interview, expect to meet with most of the staff. You also will meet with the current MSK fellow.
We want each prospective fellow to familiarize yourself with the department. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about our atmosphere and believes our program is the right fit for them.

You will also participate in a number of educational conferences.
Musculoskeletal Radiology Bagel Conference is held twice each month on Friday mornings. New England Baptist Hospital radiology musculoskeletal faculty host this conference. During this time, we present didactic and case-based talks to orthopedic residents on a variety of imaging subjects.
Orthopedic staff and faculty often attend and contribute.
Musculoskeletal Radiology Case Conference is held monthly. You present cases to the faculty. The group then discusses interesting cases.
Musculoskeletal Radiology Journal Club is held monthly. Three or four articles typically are selected for review. You present each of the articles, followed by group discussion.
The Sports Medicine Conference occurs each Monday morning. The Orthopedics department hosts this conference. It covers a variety of topics related to the sports medicine orthopedic fellowship. Imaging-arthroscopic correlation conferences are conducted quarterly with joint participation by radiology and orthopedic staff.
Orthopedic Grand Rounds is held each Wednesday morning. The Radiology & Imaging department participates with an invited speaker each year. You — like all other fellows in the hospital — give a Grand Rounds talk in the latter half of the year.
