Advanced Training in Musculoskeletal Care

The Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant Fellowship (OSPAF) offers advanced training in the diagnosis and management of adult musculoskeletal disease. As a fellow, you’ll practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH), an orthopedic specialty hospital. You will use and facilitate a full spectrum of treatment modalities — from conservative management to surgical intervention.

Duration: One year — October 1 to September 30 
Stipend: Competitive fellowship salary, plus benefits

Program Requirements

You must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Graduate of accredited physician assistant program
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • License to practice as a physician assistant in the state of Massachusetts
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications

Please note that these entry requirements are for matriculation into the program, not to apply to the OSPAF. If you are a physician assistant student (PA-S) in your final year of study and of good academic standing in your current program, we invite you to apply.  

What To Expect

The program consists of a blended didactic and clinical curriculum. You will participate in orthopedic staff duties while maintaining protected educational status during your fellowship year. You’ll participate in these activities:

  • Daily teaching rounds
  • Grand rounds
  • Journal clubs
  • Weekly conferences
  • Weekly interdisciplinary conferences
Subspecialty Orthopedic Training

During the program, you’ll receive subspecialty training in these and other areas:

You will have the opportunity to pursue special interests during your six-week elective. All subspecialty rotations include this corresponding work:

  • Operating room surgical experience
  • Outpatient clinic experience
  • Subspecialty conference
Academic Development

We provide dedicated, scheduled time for scholarly development:

  • Lectures
  • Assigned readings
  • Small group discussion
  • Competency assessment
  • Research project
On-Call Requirements

With the exception of trauma, on-call duty is not required. During your sports medicine subspecialty rotation, we strongly encourage you to participate in collegiate sports coverage.
