Restoring strength and function after injury

Recovering from Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff is one of the most important parts of your shoulder. If you suffer a rotator cuff tear or injury, we’re here to help.

What is the Rotator Cuff?

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles:

  • Supraspinatus
  • Infraspinatus
  • Subscapularis
  • Teres minor

These muscles begin at the shoulder blade and attach to the head of the upper arm bone, or humerus. They help the humerus rotate. They also help stabilize the shoulder.

A rotator cuff tear can result from a traumatic injury or repetitive motion. A traumatic injury is a one-time event, such as a fall, that causes a traction type of tear. Repetitive motions such as repeatedly throwing a ball can cause the rotator cuff muscles to weaken and tear. If your injury is sports-related, our specialists in Sports Medicine and Performance can help.
