Lung & Respiratory Care

Helping you breathe easier as you heal and recover

Comprehensive Pulmonary Care

Getting enough oxygen is important to help your body heal. That’s why we offer comprehensive pulmonary care at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH). We focus on helping you have the best possible lung health and breathing so you can have the best outcome from your orthopedic care.

At New England Baptist Hospital, you receive care from pulmonologists (lung doctors) and respiratory therapists (breathing specialists who work under the direction of a pulmonologist) who are affiliated with the hospital. We provide both inpatient and outpatient care. You can count on us for education. We also help with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all major types of lung disease and breathing disorders.

Pulmonary Care to Meet All Your Needs

When you receive orthopedic care from us, respiratory specialists may help you before, during and after your treatment. These specialists work with others caring for you to help you breathe as easily as possible.

To prepare you for a procedure, we may offer exercise physiology testing and recommendations to help you safely start a program of physical activity and conditioning. And if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we provide specialized care that helps you better manage anesthesia and surgery.

During surgery our respiratory specialists are an important part of your care team, as well. And if you need critical care, the work performed by specialists in that unit is essential to helping you recover.

Evaluation & Treatment of Respirator Disorders

Your respiratory system consists of more than just your lungs. It also includes these areas as well:

  • Air sacs (alveoli)
  • Airways (bronchi and bronchioles)
  • Mouth
  • Nose and nasal cavity
  • Sinus passages
  • Throat (pharynx)
  • Voice box (larynx)
  • Windpipe (trachea)

Our specialists can help you with conditions affecting any of these body parts. If you have symptoms — such as wheezing, shortness of breath, changes in breathing rate or nose flaring — we can carefully evaluate your condition. Our goal is to diagnose and treat any lung or breathing disorder so your orthopedic care will be most effective.

To make a diagnosis, we may use a variety of tests, such as blood tests, imaging scans and lung function tests that show how well your lungs are working. Depending on what we learn, we may recommend medication, supplemental oxygen or other therapies to improve your lung health. In some cases, pulmonary rehabilitation may be beneficial, too. This is a program that includes education and exercise. It’s designed to help you feel better, build endurance and manage your lung health.

Pulmonary Laboratory

Our pulmonary laboratory uses special equipment to help us determine how well your lungs are working. A wide variety of tests are offered on an outpatient basis. The lab is located on the New England Baptist Hospital campus.
