New England Baptist Hospital Names Two Doctors To Leadership Positions
Boston, Mass. – New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) announced the appointment of two physicians to new leadership roles. Eric Smith, MD, has been named Chair of Orthopedics and Daniel Ward, MD, has been named Chief of Arthroplasty.
“These appointments represent a new leadership team for the Orthopedics Department and the Arthroplasty section,” said David Passafaro, president of NEBH. “Dr. Eric Smith will bring a new perspective to the operation and direction of the Department during exciting times for NEBH Orthopedics, and Dr. Daniel Ward has long been a strong voice for change, innovation and entrepreneurship from within the Arthroplasty section. Both will be welcome additions to our leadership team.”
Smith has been with NEBH for six years, previously serving as the Chief of Arthroplasty and the Medical Director of the Orthopedic Specialty Practice. Prior to joining NEBH, Smith served as Chief, Division of Arthroplasty and Fellowship Director at Boston Medical Center. He earned his undergraduate degree from University of California at Davis, his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, and completed his residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. Smith is a graduate of the NEBH Otto Aufranc Fellowship program. Smith served ten years on active duty, during which time he was deployed to Afghanistan as an orthopedic surgeon in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Ward is currently the Medical Director for Co-Management- Arthroplasty and the Director of Fellowship Education at NEBH. Ward graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed both his internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and is a graduate of the Otto Aufranc Fellowship program at NEBH.
Smith replaces David Mattingly, MD, who previously served as the Chair of Orthopedics for many years. Mattingly will stay on as NEBH’s Berenson-Allen Surgeon-in-Chief.
“It is impossible to overstate the importance of the long-time service and leadership of Dr. David Mattingly,” said Passafaro. “Fortunately for the Baptist, he has agreed to remain in his key role as Surgeon-in-Chief while he makes changes to his clinical schedule.”
