About Dr. Mithoefer

Dr. Kai Mithoefer is an orthopedic surgeon at New England Baptist Hospital specializing in surgery of the knee and shoulder as well as joint preservation. He is board certified in both orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine. After medical school in Germany he received his residency training in the Harvard Orthopedic Residency Program. Following residency Dr. Mithoefer completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Dr. Mithoefer has more than 15 years of clinical expertise and is an internationally recognized specialist for sports medicine, joint preservation and regenerative orthopedics. His special clinical expertise includes the application of state-of-the-art minimally invasive and developing regenerative technology to facilitate and accelerate recovery and return to athletic and work activities. His extensive expertise with both surgical and non-surgical treatment methods allows him to offer a unique and highly individualized approach to functional joint restoration that is matched to each patient’s specific situation.

Dr. Mithoefer has published more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters and is frequent speaker at national and international orthopedic meetings.

Dr. Mithoefer has extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels including as team physician of the New England Revolution, US Men’s and Youth National Soccer Teams, World Team Tennis, and US Davis Cup Tennis Team. He has also served as the Assistant Medical Director for Major League Soccer (MLS). Having played sports at the professional and recreational level, he understands the athlete's mindset and practices with the primary goal of returning his patients safely and rapidly to their active lifestyles.
